História da Medicina Hat
Em 1883, a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) parou para construir uma ponte sobre o rio South Saskatchewan e uma cidade de tendas nasceu. Com a chegada da ferrovia veio a Polícia Montada do Noroeste. Eles mantinham a lei e a ordem entre os trabalhadores ferroviários e as pessoas da Primeira Nação da área e tornavam a Medicine Hat uma cidade que cumpria a lei.
Na busca da CPR por água, seus furos atingiram acidentalmente o gás a oeste da cidade, anunciando a exploração que mapeou um dos maiores campos de gás da América do Norte. No final de 1903, o Conselho da Cidade embarcou em um programa para abastecer todos os residentes com gás, o início de uma empresa pública de propriedade da cidade. Em 1906, o Medicine Hat foi incorporado como uma cidade.

Em 1905, Alberta foi incorporada como uma província e Medicine Hat foi a maior comunidade no sudeste de Alberta. Seus moradores usavam gás natural como uma fonte barata de energia.
A configuração atual do Aeroporto Regional da Medicine Hat foi inicialmente estabelecida pelo Departamento de Defesa Nacional. Foi originalmente criada como Base de Treinamento Aéreo da Commonwealth e foi inaugurada em 14 de março de 1941. A Escola de Treinamento de Vôo nº 34 treinou mais de 3000 aviadores durante os três anos e meio em que a escola estava em operação. Em 1947, o Departamento de Defesa Nacional transferiu a propriedade do aeroporto para o City of Medicine Hat e continua a ser propriedade hoje.
A lenda por trás do 'Medicine Hat'
Medicine Hat herdou seu nome da palavra nativa "saamis", que significa chapéu de homem de medicina. Várias lendas contam a história de como essa cidade foi nomeada. Uma dessas lendas é lindamente retratada em um mural de tijolos esculpidos na Prefeitura.

A lenda fala de um inverno de grande fome e dificuldades para a nação Blackfoot. Os anciãos do Conselho escolheram um jovem para salvar sua tribo da fome. Partindo de sua nova esposa e do cão lobo favorito, ele viajou pelo rio South Saskatchewan, cercado de gelo. Depois de muitos dias árduos, eles abriram caminho para o “buraco respiratório”, uma abertura no gelo, localizada no rio entre o que hoje é o Police Point e o Strathcona Park em Medicine Hat. Este local era um local sagrado para o povo das Primeiras Nações: um lugar onde os espíritos da água vinham respirar.
Eles acamparam e convocaram os espíritos para aparecerem. Uma serpente gigante levantou-se das águas turvas e exigiu o sacrifício da mulher em troca de um "saamis" ou "chapéu sagrado", que dotaria o proprietário de poderes especiais e grande proeza de caça. O jovem tentou enganar a serpente jogando o corpo de seu cachorro no rio, mas a serpente não foi enganada e, finalmente, com relutância, a mulher foi jogada nas águas geladas.
O homem foi dito para passar a noite na pequena ilha (Strathcona) e "de manhã, quando o sol ilumina os bancos, vá para a base das grandes falésias e lá você encontrará o seu Medicine Hat". E assim auxiliado pela magia de seus saamis, o jovem caçador localizou o tão necessário jogo, salvou seu povo e acabou se tornando um grande Homem de Medicina.

History of Medicine Hat
In 1883, the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) stopped to build a bridge across the South Saskatchewan River and a tent town was born. With the arrival of the railroad came the Northwest Mounted Police. They maintained law and order among the railway workers and First Nation’s people of the area and made Medicine Hat a law-abiding town.
In the CPR’s search for water, their drills accidentally struck gas west of the town, heralding the exploration that mapped out one of the largest gas fields in North America. In the latter part of 1903, City Council embarked on a program to supply all residents with gas, the beginning of a City-owned utility. In 1906, Medicine Hat was incorporated as a City.
Did you know? Since the turn of the century, Medicine Hat's own gas fields have supplied the traditional gas lamps that continue to light the historic downtown district.
Other Historical Highlights
In 1905, Alberta was incorporated as a province and Medicine Hat was the largest community in southeastern Alberta. Its residents were using natural gas as an inexpensive source of energy.
The Medicine Hat Regional Airport’s current configuration was initially established by the Department of National Defence. It was originally set up as a Commonwealth Air Training Base and opened March 14, 1941. The #34 Service Flying Training School trained over 3000 airmen during the three and a half years the school was in operation. In 1947, the Department of National Defence transferred ownership of the airport to the City of Medicine Hat and continues to be owned today.
The Legend Behind 'Medicine Hat'
Medicine Hat inherited its name from the native word "saamis" which means medicine man's hat. A number of legends tell the story of how this city was named. One of these legends is beautifully depicted in a sculptured brick mural at City Hall.

The legend tells of a winter of great famine and hardship for the Blackfoot nation. The elders of the Council chose a young man to save his tribe from starvation. Setting out with his new wife and favourite wolf dog, he journeyed down the ice-bound South Saskatchewan River. After many arduous days they made their way to the “breathing hole” an opening in the ice, located on the river between what is now Police Point and Strathcona Park in Medicine Hat. This location was a sacred place to the First Nations’ people: a place where the water spirits came to breathe.
They made camp and summoned the spirits to appear. A giant serpent rose from the misty waters and demanded the sacrifice of the woman in exchange for a “Saamis” or “holy bonnet” which would endow the owner with special powers and great hunting prowess. The young man tried to trick the serpent by throwing the body of his dog into the river, but the serpent was not fooled, and finally reluctantly, the woman was thrown into the frigid waters.
The man was told to spend the night on the small island (Strathcona) and “in the morning when the sun lights the cut-banks, go to the base of the great cliffs and there you will find your Medicine Hat”. And so aided by the magic of his Saamis, the young hunter located the much needed game, saved his people, and eventually became a great Medicine Man.
